If you’ve been reading these blogs at all regularly, you’ll know that Jane and I, in the coldest months of the year, don’t fly off for hours to find places where the air is warm; rather we will search out hot natural spas so that, however cold it is, we can loll around up to our necks: benignly somnolent, like the lucky macacques in Japan.

Just three weeks ago, in Hungary, our good friend Csilla drove us to the town of Tapolca, by Lake Balaton, where we stayed the night in a hotel run by her cousin.   The spa opened at seven the next morning, and we were able to step down into some 35 degrees of water inside the building, and then swam on, pushing aside some transparent plastic hangings which gave access to the world outside the hotel (just as we did in Baden Baden a few years back).

And there we found ourselves swimming along, our heads half out of the water, with snowflakes whipped up by the wind whirling around among the steam.  Bliss!
