This is a studio photograph of my mother taken, I’m guessing,
in 1935, the year before she met my father on the liner El Nil.
(Click here to read my first account of their meeting, )
(here to see photographs from that time,)
(and here to read more about the events of 1936).
I imagine this will be the final posting about my parents’ first meeting and subsequent marriage. This is because I have been able to track down a copy of their marriage licence !
As I suspected, the wedding took place in December 1936, on the 16th of the month, to be precise, the marriage being solemnized at
The British Consulate General Alexandria Egypt
by
C.E. Heathcote-Smith H. B. M. Consul-General.
between
Lyle Vaughan-Rees, Age 25, Bachelor, Navigating Officer, residing in Alexandria, Father William Thomas Rees, Profession of Father ‘Commercial’
and
Laura May Wilcock, age 26, Spinster, no profession given, residing in London, Father Bruce Wilcock, Profession of Father ‘Business’.
in the presence of
Carl Hans Grater (presumably a fellow officer)
and
Hildagard Brinckmeier (possibly from the ship as well).
So that’s it (unless, of course, I can find out more about the witnesses; a Google search hasn’t helped, but who knows?)
Yes, it was December 1936!
